Equus caballus Horse Jaw FossilDescription: This jaw section is from the modern horse (Equus caballus), a large odd-toed ungulate mammal, one of ten modern species of the family Equidae. This animal would have lived in a world many tens of years before man domesticated the horse. The Pleistocene epoch on the geologic timescale is the period from 1,808,000 to 11,550 years ago. This is a most striking and dynamic display piece. It is quite large with excellent color and presence. Note the row of large grinding teeth. On an appropriate stand it would grace a living space, or be the centerpiece of a fossil collection. Even by the end of the Pleistocene, humans still lived in hunter-gatherer tribes, and would not domtesticate horses for another 5000 years. This fossil might make a perfect gift for the horse-lover.
