Astonishing Diplichnites arthropod trace fossil

Name: Diplichnites and an undescribed species.

Age: Middle Cambrian

Size: 38 x 52 inches at its maximum width and height

Location: Krukowski Quarry, Mount Simon Sandstone near Mosinee Wisconsin

Shown below are many pictures of an amazing trace fossil slab. It is by far the finest trace fossil slab (arthropod) so far to come out of a private, Middle Cambrian Krukowski Quarry in Central Wisconsin. It measures 38 x 52 inches at its maximum width and height. There are two distinct types traces on the slab. The wide dimples are called Diplichnites and the other is undescribed. The depositional environment in this quarry varies from very shallow marine to aerial. Climachtichnites and Protichnites both are believed to have left the water in feed in damp aerial sands (beach front), that is, if you believe that Climachtichnites is a trace and not a body fossil. However, Protichnites without a doubt is an arthropod trace and is now published as having been found in an early Upper Cambrian dune sand. This is very significant as these arthropods may have been some the very first large organisms and carnivores to abandon their marine habitat to utilize the terrestrial environment. At least, the related (and found in this quarry), Protichnites has been proven to do so.

At present, it is generally accepted that the age of this sandstone unit is Lower to Upper Cambrian and thus represents an outlier of the Mount Simon Sandstone. All this makes sense when one realizes that there are jellyfish being stranded in an aerial environment.
