Fossil Mustelid SkullDescription: This skull belongs to the largest known member of the Mustelidae: Eomellivora. The Mustelidae are today represented by the weasels, badgers, wolverines, and otters. The Mustelids diversified during the Neogene, and migrated from Eurasia to North American during the Late Miocene some 7-8 million years ago in their second wave of invasion. The first appearance of this immense taxon was in the early Vallesian of Europe some 11 million years ago. Notice the photograph that shows a smaller, more typically-sized Mustelid for a size comparison. This one may have lost out its predator niche to the bears that it resembles. This is an exceptional example of a taxon rarely offered for sale.
