Walliserops trifurcatus Trilobite Evolution

Walliserops trifurcatus trilobites are an exemplars of the creativity of adaptation by means of natural selection. Three major evolutionary innovations are evident compared with the early Redlichiida trilobites that appeared in the Cambrian:

  • Schizochroal crystal eyes to better see predator and prey.

  • Many sharp spines to protect against the recently evolved jawed fishes.

  • A long so-called trident appendage of mysterious purpose.

The trident must have been important to survive in the Walliserops’ environmental niche, given that enormous selective adaptation and energy would have been expended in growing it. Speculation regarding its purpose are wide ranging:

  • Sensory organ

  • Some form of camouflage

  • Defensive weapon

  • Suspension above the seafloor

  • Sexual dimorphic feature as seen in horned beetles
