Coccodus cretaceous fossil fishDescription: This plate displays a rarely seen example of Coccodus insignis preserved in a 3-D attitude. Coccodus had broad rounded teeth resembling cobblestones. Notice the detail to this crushing pavement seen here.They were presumably employed in crushing the shells of mollusks and small crustaceans it found while sifting through the bottom muck. The genus went extinct by the Upper Cretaceous, leaving no descendants.
